In the original, Camille Keaton’s Jennifer is ethereal and ghostlike; her revenge is primal and almost mystical. Butler’s Jennifer, however, is raw, tangible, and achingly human. The 48-minute assault sequence (notoriously longer than the original’s 30-minute sequence) is relentless, but Butler never lets the audience forget the character behind the trauma. But for the seasoned horror fan who understands the difference between endorsing violence and examining violence, this film remains a powerful artifact.
